Giraffe

Modern life · draft

Seeing over everything, and being seen from everywhere.

IN SHORT

A giraffe dream can picture height, a wide view and the awkwardness of standing out. Note where it was, how close you came, and what it could see.

THE DETAILS MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Which version was yours?

A giraffe walking down your street

Record who else saw it and how they reacted. Note whether it seemed lost or at ease, and what in your own neighbourhood has recently felt out of scale.

The giraffe bends down to you

Write down what it did when its face reached yours: looked, licked, or simply waited. Note what you said, and whether the contact felt like recognition.

A neck too long to manage

Note whether the neck was yours or the animal's and where it got caught. Ask what you have been stretching toward lately, and whether the reach is costing you balance.

AN INNER PERSPECTIVE

A way to think about it

A giraffe sees further than anything else in its landscape and cannot hide in it. Dreaming of one can picture the pleasure of a long view, the loneliness of being visibly different, or the strain of reaching for something high while the rest of you stays on the ground. Begin with the setting. A giraffe on the savannah, in a zoo, or walking down your street are three different dreams, and the out-of-place giraffe usually carries the strongest charge. Record how close you came and whether it bent down to you. A giraffe lowering its head to your level is a gesture of unexpected intimacy, and it is worth noting what you felt when it did. If you rode one, write down what you could see from up there and what you noticed about the people below. Note the neck in particular. A neck that was too long to be practical, that bent strangely, or that got stuck somewhere can picture the cost of reaching. Consider whether you have recently been the tallest person in a room, in any sense: the most senior, the most conspicuous, the one others look to for a view. Then ask what the giraffe was eating or looking at, because its attention was somewhere, and following it can show you where yours has been.

STORIES & CONTEXT

The stories behind the symbol

No historical dream book in DreamFolia's archive has an entry for the giraffe. The collection covers other large animals, including the elephant, the lion, the tiger and the zebra, with period readings that each sit on their own page, and Miller 1901 has an entry for the zoological garden where such animals were seen. None of those readings is transferred to the giraffe, and the page borrows no older meaning.
