Speeding

Modern life · draft

Faster than you meant to go, and not sure the brakes will answer.

IN SHORT

Speeding dreams can picture momentum, lost control or the thrill of excess. Note who was driving, whether the brakes worked, and what you were late for.

THE DETAILS MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Which version was yours?

The brakes do nothing

Record when you first noticed and what you tried instead: the handbrake, the gears, steering for the verge. Note what was ahead of you, since the thing you were about to hit is often the clearest clue.

Being pulled over for speeding

Write down who stopped you and what they said. Note whether you argued, and what you were rushing toward when the lights appeared behind you.

Enjoying the speed

Note who was with you and whether they shared the pleasure. Ask what in waking life is currently exhilarating in the same way, and whether anyone has asked you to ease off.

AN INNER PERSPECTIVE

A way to think about it

Speeding dreams come in two kinds that feel very different from inside. In one, you press the pedal and enjoy it; the road opens and nothing can catch you. In the other, the speed is happening to you, the brakes are soft or missing, and every bend arrives too soon. Record which kind you had, because the first can picture appetite and the second can picture a situation that has gathered pace beyond your say. Then note the vehicle and the driver. A car you own, a borrowed one, or a vehicle you have never driven each change the sense of responsibility, and a driver who is not you deserves a sentence of their own. Write down whether anyone else was in the car, what they said, and whether they asked you to slow down. Police, cameras and tickets introduce the question of being caught, so note whether you were stopped and what the penalty was. Consider what you were late for, if anything. Finally, compare the dream with your waking week: a deadline brought forward, a relationship moving quickly, a decision being rushed. Speed in a dream is rarely about the car, and the honest answer to 'what has recently accelerated?' is usually the thread worth following.

STORIES & CONTEXT

The stories behind the symbol

Speeding as an offence, or as the experience of a vehicle moving too fast, has no entry in the historical dream books in DreamFolia's archive. Miller 1901 has entries for the automobile and for driving, and Noe 1885 has one for racing, each with its own period beliefs; those are kept on their own pages rather than stretched to cover a modern road at speed. No older meaning is borrowed for this entry; it draws only on the details you remember of the pedal, the brakes and the road.
