Time travel

Modern life · draft

Stepping into another year, forward or back, puts you where you could not otherwise stand.

IN SHORT

Time-travel dreams carry you into a past or future you can walk through. Which way you went, and what you tried to change, are the first notes to make.

THE DETAILS MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Which version was yours?

You return to a childhood home and warn your younger self

Record the warning word for word. What you chose to tell a younger you may be the clearest statement of what you wish someone had told you, and whether the child listened is a second clue.

You arrive decades ahead and nobody knows you

A future in which you are unrecognised can picture worry about being forgotten or about losing a place you hold now. Ask whether you searched for anyone in particular, and what you found.

You travel back to change one event and it happens anyway

An unchangeable past can be a hard dream to wake from. Consider whether you have been revisiting a decision, and whether the dream's stubbornness felt like fate, relief, or an invitation to stop re-litigating.

AN INNER PERSPECTIVE

A way to think about it

Note the direction first. Going backward often places you among people and rooms you once knew, sometimes with your present mind and sometimes as the person you were. Going forward tends to be sparser, with unfamiliar streets or older versions of people you love. Then ask whether you could change anything. Some dreamers intervene, warn someone, or undo a choice; others are stuck as observers, able to see but not touch. The difference can be a way to picture how much influence you currently feel over the direction of your life. A trip to the past may be prompted by anniversaries, old photographs, a reunion, or a decision that has reopened an earlier one. A trip forward can follow planning, uncertainty about a move, or simple curiosity about how things turn out. Record who you met in the other time and whether they recognised you, since recognition or its absence often carries the strongest feeling in the dream. Notice also the mechanism, if there was one: a door, a machine, a sudden cut. Dreams rarely explain their physics, and the device you dreamed can be as telling as the destination.

The stories behind the symbol

Time travel as an idea postdates most of DreamFolia's archive, and no book in it describes a journey into another era, so no older meaning is borrowed. The closest entries are about time itself. The Artemidorus 1644 translation makes a clock stand for actions and attempts, with a falling or broken clock as serious danger. Fontaine 1862 and Noe 1885 both hold that hearing a clock strike promises a speedy marriage and that counting the morning hours is luckier than counting the afternoon ones. Miller 1901 reads dreaming of the future as a call for careful reckoning. These remain period conventions.
